Meet Ricky Workman
The Memphis Years
I grew up in Memphis, Tennessee, a place where curiosity was a constant companion. As a kid, I devoured books on a wide range of topics, from science to history to art, always eager to learn something new. That same curiosity eventually shaped my career as a geophysicist, taking me across the globe and offering a front-row seat to the world's stunning natural beauty. But even as I immersed myself in science, I found myself drawn to creative outlets—writing poetry, essays, and short stories became a way to process the world around me.
At fifteen, everything changed when I received a simple camera as a birthday gift. That little camera ignited a lifelong love for photography. What began as snapshots of family outings, fishing trips, and motor races soon evolved into something much deeper. My travels as a geophysicist brought me face-to-face with breathtaking landscapes, vibrant wildlife, and ancient archaeological sites, and I couldn’t help but capture them through my lens. Over time, photography became more than a hobby—it became a way to express myself and connect with the world on a profoundly personal level.
I Get Serious About Photographic Art
My development as an art photographer began in earnest twenty years ago. I spent five enriching years in the Advanced Photography Workshop Program at Rice University, where sharing ideas, critiques, and inspiration with fellow photographers pushed me to grow. It was during this time that I discovered the works of the great photographers who continue to inspire me today. Since then, I’ve deepened my skills by participating in workshops and field experiences, including many with National Park Photography Expeditions (NPPE). The mentorship program with NPPE has been a turning point, equipping me with the tools and insights to approach photography with a greater sense of purpose and artistry.
When I travel, I look for special moments that transcend the ordinary—moments when light, form, and emotion come together to create something unforgettable. I’m not the kind of person who says a lot unless there’s something meaningful to share, but through my images, I let the world see what moves me most.
For me, photography is more than just a creative outlet—it’s a way to connect, trust my instincts, and share my vision with others. Whether you’re drawn to the stillness of a desert, the vibrant energy of wildlife, or the timeless allure of an ancient site, my goal is to create images that invite you to see the world through my eyes and perhaps discover something about yourself along the way.
In the Present
Today, I’ve embraced photography as both an art form and a journey of self-discovery. From seascapes to deserts, my images reflect the quiet moments that move me, the fleeting beauty of light and shadow, and the emotions these scenes stir within me. Photography isn’t just about creating images; it’s about learning—about art, about nature, and about myself.
